How to Start Working Out When You Literally Have No Motivation

Light purple yoga mat rolled out in a cozy, sunlit living room with an orange mug and fuzzy pink slippers nearby; soft decor in warm purple, pink, and orange tones creates a calm, feminine vibe.

(from someone who would 100% rather be lying down)

Let me just start by saying this: I get it.The couch is comfy. Your playlist hits different when you’re not moving. And sometimes the only thing working is your DoorDash app. Been there.

I went from bartending (on my feet nonstop) to working from home, and suddenly I was just… still. All the time. And even though I wanted to be more active — I literally love hiking and being outdoors — I found myself just laying around, mad at myself for not doing the thing I said I wanted to do.

If you’re in that same spot, this post is for you. Whether you’re starting a beginner workout routine or just need some kind of fitness motivation, I’m breaking down how I got moving again… lazy girl style.

Start Small: Easy beginner Fitness Ideas That Actually Work

Flat lay of workout essentials on a striped yoga mat, including a turquoise HydroJug water bottle, Nike sports bra, white Nike running shoes, black leggings, white socks, Jack Link’s beef jerky, and wireless earbuds. All items for a lazy girl approved fitness routine.

Forget “beast mode.” That’s not the vibe here. I started with short walks — like, around the block type walks. I had just moved to a new city, so exploring made it feel less like a workout and more like a little solo adventure. Even five minutes outside gave me that tiny hit of energy I needed to say, “Okay, I did something today.”

Your “something” could be:

  • 5 minutes of stretching
  • A 10-minute YouTube yoga video
  • Dancing in your kitchen for one song

The goal isn’t to crush it. It’s to start — and then do it again tomorrow.

Make It Way Too Easy

My bare-minimum routine? Comfy clothes. Yoga mat. YouTube on the TV.

That’s it.

When I really don’t feel like doing anything, I’ll still put on a stretching or yoga video and just go through the motions. Even that gives me a little energy boost and reminds me that I’m capable of showing up — even if I don’t feel like it.

And honestly? That’s a win.

The Self-Talk Trick

When I want to skip a workout or stop halfway through, I remind myself of two things:

  1. You don’t see results when you skip.
  2. Quitting now just makes it take even longer to see the results you want.

Harsh? Maybe. But real.I’ve had so many phases where I worked out for months and saw nothing — because I kept falling off. Now I use that frustration to fuel me instead of giving up again.

Find Accountability (Even a Little Bit)

I’m lucky I have my boyfriend to keep me on track, but if you don’t have someone in person — find a friend. Me and my bestie text each other when we work out and it literally makes us both show up more. It doesn’t have to be a deep fitness journey. Just a “Did you move today?” check-in.

Apps help too. I used Foodvisor for a while to track calories, and the app would literally get mad if I didn’t log — it ended my streak! It helped me get consistent, and now that I’ve built healthy habits, I can manage without it.

Build Your Lazy Girl Vibe

Working out doesn’t need to be in a gym with strangers and harsh lighting.

My perfect vibe:

  • Good playlist (or honestly, a podcast so I don’t even realize I’m working out)
  • AC on blast
  • Soft clothes, no shoes
  • Yoga mat + a quick Nike Training Club workout

Make your space work for you — cozy, quiet, pressure-free. That’s when it gets easier to show up.

If You’re Reading This Thinking “Ugh, I Still Don’t Wanna”…

Text a friend and say: “I’m working out now. Text me when you’re done with yours.” Sometimes it’s not about feeling ready — it’s about deciding to do it anyway. A little tough love never hurt anybody 😏

You got this. Even if it’s just a 5-minute stretch today, it counts. And tomorrow? You’ll be glad you didn’t quit.
